These tutorials are based on three different scenarios and are examples of how tasks can be performed in the LCMS.
The LCMS installation package contains a demo course, DemoCourse.zip, which is used in these scenarios. If you don't have access to the demo course on the LCMS you can download it and import it yourself. You will find the demo course here. Please contact your system administrator if you need help with this step. You can use these tutorials without having access the demo course - just disregard the file names and the course examples and read through the material.
This tutorial will assemble a new course from existing learning objects in the repository. The actor in this tutorial is a content manager and the content used is from a course about banking.
Start by creating a new folder in the system in My
Area. Do this by clicking on the (
). Name the folder
Aeroplanes.
In this step we will reuse learning resources by copying them from an existing course to our new Aeroplane course.
First we need to find the learning resources that we need. You can find learning resources by opening the folders and looking in the content, or use the search function.
To perform a search click on
(
). In the search view you enter your search
criteria(s) and specify what fields to search in. In this example we
will search for the keyword aeroplanes. Enter
aeroplanes as a search criteria and specify
Keyword as the field to search in and click
.
The search result will be displayed in a list. In order to know
which learning resource to use in our course we click on
(
) next to the name of the learning resource that
we are interested in.
Some of the hits in the search result list will maybe have a grey check box in front of them that means that that object is unavailable since it resides inside a packed course version. It is also important to note that the search result list can contain different types of components.
When you find a learning resource that contains a table of
contents and a small aeroplane that is the one we are going to reuse.
Select the learning resource by checking the check box in front of it.
Click on (
). Go back to the folder view by clicking on
(
). You should now be back in the Aeroplanes
folder. Paste the learning resource into the folder by clicking on
(
). You have now copied your first learning
resource! You can now repeat this process to find more learning
resources to reuse. If you search with the Title Aeroplanes Test you
should find a learning resource that is an online test. Copy that
learning resource to your Aeroplane folder as well.
Learning resources do not necessarily have to be copied for reuse, they can also be linked into the course package. This tutorial shows how objects are copied.
You have now copied two learning resources to our new course.
The next step is to create a structure for the course. The structure
is the ”road map” that course participants will follow through the
course. To create a structure click (
). Enter a name for the structure, for example
Aeroplanes 2. Leave all the other fields empty at
this point and click on the tab to open
the area where the content of the structure is edited.
Now a content structure is to be created and learning resources linked to it. Start by creating structure items through which learning resources can be linked.
Click (
) enter item name, for example Learn
to fly. Click on in order to
select the learning resource that you want to link to this item in the
structure. You will see a list of the learning resources in the
Aeroplanes folder. Select the first learning resource that you copied
by clicking on it and then click To save
the structure item click .
You can now repeat this process to add the second learning resource to the structure. Name the second item Flight Quiz. When that is done you click to save the structure.
We are now ready to create the new course where we are reusing the learning resources that we have copied. The procedure is to create a course manifest where all course components are included. This course manifest is then packed to create versions of the course. A version of a course can then be published.
To create your new course click on (
). Enter the Title
Aeroplanes. Click
(
) under the Content tab to
select the recently created course structure Aeroplanes
2. Check the check box in front of the name Aeroplanes 2
and then click on . Skip the rest of the meta
data fields and click on . You will now be
in the folder called Aeroplanes and the new
course named Aeroplanes is available as an open
box (
). The course now contains the structure and all
the learning resources.
To pack the course (create a version of the course) for
publishing click
(
). Select the folder (in this example we will
store it in the Aeroplanes folder) where you want to store the course
version and click . The course is now packed
and ready to be published. There is only one version available for
this course now since it is the first time the course is
packed.
We are now ready to publish our new course to the LMS so that it can be used in online training.
To publish the course select the course package by clicking on
the Name of the (
). A list of all versions of this course will be
displayed. In this example we only have one version at this time.
Click on
(
). You have to enter your password in order to
complete the publish procedure then click
. The course is now sent to the LMS and
will be available as an Unregistered Course Master. Please refer to
the LMS documentation on how to enroll users in the course.
